Strike and Dip

Take your iPhone into the field

Welcome to Strike and Dip! Take your strike & dip measurements in one step, and save them as notes. Take bearings as you would with a pocket transit, or take them using your iPhone’ camera. Strike and dip keeps your field notes, with every note tagged with your GPS coordinates and the time and date. Edit your notes right on your iPhone, and email them to yourself in a comma-delimited file that can be opened by almost any data-analysis tool. Watch how easy it is to use Strike and Dip.

Strike and Dip is international and works in English, French, German, and Spanish.

Requires iPhone 3GS.

Strike and Dip 2 Home

To measure strike and dip, lay the iPhone on the surface, and read your strike and dip. That’s a lot simpler than with a pocket transit! If you want to save the measurement, press the plus sign to save it as a note. Your date, time, and GPS coordinates will automatically be added. If you have internet access where you’re working, you can show your current location by pressing the globe button in the lower left. The strike and dip screen also shows your current GPS position, elevation, and the errors in both. When you have a good GPS signal, position and elevation turn yellow.

Strike and Dip 2 Bearing

To measure bearing, hold your iPhone level. Yellow triangles will show you how to tip your iPhone to level lit. Once it’s level, the bearing will turn green, telling you have an accurate bearing. If you want to save it, press the plus button in the lower right. Your date, time, and GPS coordinates will be saved, too. You can also use your camera to site on a distant feature and take a bearing to it: just press the camera button, and in a few seconds, you’re ready to go. Press save to record the bearing, or cancel to return from the camera view.
